Dedicated to Baby Matthew Robert Pierce
Jul. 14, 2010 – Feb. 8, 2013

Author’s note:

Matthew Robert Pierce was my friend’s son.  He was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) at two months of age, and fought it every day for two years.  There is only a 30% survival rate for children diagnosed with this disease.  After three unsuccessful bone marrow transplants and a host of other cancer treatments, Baby Matthew passed on February 8, 2013.  In his short life, he managed to touch the hearts of many, many people.

Did you know that September is National Childhood Cancer Awareness month?  It is represented by a gold ribbon.  1/4 of the children diagnosed with pediatric cancer will not make it because most cancer treatments were designed for adults – not kids with smaller bodies and different, maturing immune systems.

I wrote this nonsense poem to reflect the no-sense of losing a child to cancer.  I remember the days when we would hear news of Baby Matthew’s treatments, and the suffering that followed.  I remember the feeling of helplessness, and wishing that I could take away the pain that no child should ever feel.  I wrote this poem, because I hope that like me, Baby Matthew would bring pediatric cancer awareness to others, and that their actions, like mine, would eventually lead to cures so that one day, my nonsense poems would no longer be needed.  I wrote this poem, because awareness and action are the only things I can do to fight and protect children diagnosed with pediatric cancer.  In his rememory, Baby Matthew wears a golden ribbon, and his laughter is like little bells in the stars.  They bring hope, dreams, and an end to the suffering.

“‘When you look up at the sky at night, since I’ll be living on one of them, since I’ll be laughing on one of them, for you it’ll be as if all the stars are laughing. You’ll have stars that can laugh!’

And he laughed again.

‘And when you’re consoled (everyone eventually is consoled), you’ll be glad you’ve known me. You’ll always be my friend. You’ll feel like laughing with me. And you’ll open your window sometimes just for the fun of it…And your friends will be amazed to see you laughing while you’re looking up at the sky. Then you’ll tell them, ‘Yes, it’s the stars; they always make me laugh!'”

The Relay Wizards Charity Art Auction for the American Cancer Society

Art is an intimate relationship between the artist and connoisseur shared by an object that evokes emotion and meaning. It is an expression of the creator as much as it creates!
